    Abstract
Athough the human face is commonly used as aphysiological biometric, very little work has been done to exploitthe idiosyncrasies of facial motions for person identification. Inthis paper, we investigate the uniqueness and permanence of facialactions to determine whether these can be used as a behavioralbiometric. Experiments are carried out using 3-D video data ofparticipants performing a set of very short verbal and nonverbalfacial actions. The data have been collected over long timeintervals to assess the variability of the subjects’ emotional and physical conditions. Quantitative evaluations are performed forboth the identification and the verification problems; the resultsindicate that emotional expressions (e.g., smile and disgust) arenot sufficiently reliable for identity recognition in real-lifesituations,whereas speech-related facial movements show promisingpotential.
